Simply Baby: 20 Special Handknits for Baby's First Two YearsReviewsThe photography is this book is lovely. The patterns are ones I wish I could create. However, I am a long time beginner knitter (I've been knitting a long time, but I'm still no good!)and I thought that based on the reviews and the book (beginner to intermediate) I would be able to tackle this book. I have not been able to knit a single thing! I've tried, it is just more complex than my skill set at the moment. This book is not for true beginners. This knitting book has a some wonderful baby patterns for the intermediate knitter. The cabled baby blanket is especially nice and a change from the patterns one usually sees. I use a lot of Debbie Bliss yarns when knitting for kids and babies: her color sense and practicality (machine washable yarns in perfect colors!) are unparalleled. This book, in particular, is useful because there is a range of design: easy to complex, plain to color-work, quick to more time-consuming. Something that I appreciate is that the photos are right with the actual patterns. The book has some quick intro material such as, how-to's, yarns that are good for babies, and swatches of stitch patterns so you can see what these stitch types look like. If you substitute in other yarns (say, Cascade or Classic Elite), you can extrapolate from the book how these other yarns might work out. And, although Debbie Bliss is an English designer (and company), this third edition's info is given in American inches and needle sizes. A book that well whet your appetite to knit for any babies in your life. Great patterns for that organic knitter. what a wonderful collection of beautiful baby things for knitting moms, grandmoms and all doting relatives. Average Rating:![]() |

Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church HatsReviewsVery nice book I wish there were more color but other than that very happy with my purchase ... I received this book as a birthday present. The quality of the photographs and interviews cannot be overstated. It is simply gorgeous through and through. The sensitivity of the men who created this book is just phenomenal. Aesthetically and spiritually, the book is like a tall cool drink to those who thirst for what is truly beautiful. PS for those who wished the photos were in color: The black and white photography is what brought out the textures, the highlights, the character of these women and their hats. Had the photos been in color, the portraits would have been more about the hats and less about the women. Color is beautiful but its absence in photos often helps us notice other beautiful elements that are often otherwise unnoticed. This is a wonderful book about the history of hats for Black Women (the reason hats are important, the pride they have when they wear them). The book was used but in excellent condition and a reasonable price even with shipping charge. I only wish the pictures had been in color to see these glorious hats more true to life. Although the black and white seems "right" I'd still like to know what the colors are. I was skeptical because I thought the pictures being in black and white would not be appealing, but not so. It was absolutely beautiful. I relished every hat story and there were some BAD HATS. I mean they were sharp - African American style. This is a great book. I didn't want to put it down, and finished it in 2 days, only because I had to work, sleep, etc... A woman's hat speaks long before she utters a word. So it says on the inside flap of this beautiful book of black and white photos of Black Women in Church Hats. From the first photo of Beth Hopkins and her mother to the last photo Sanclary Saunders with her hat, "without no veil," we are treated to respectful photos from the artful lens of Michael Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham's artistic eye is what really makes this book. Well, his subjects do too and Craig Marberry's text adds to the book, but it's really Cunningham's artistry that makes this one of the best contemporary photography books I've seen in a long time. The women pictured in this book all have hattitude and believe me, it's a good thing to have and it's catching, I know, because after spending a delightful couple hours reading the stories that accompany the photos, with Billie Holiday playing in the background, I knew I didn't have any good hats and I have a lot of hats, baseball hats, floppy hats and a safari hat or two, but nothing really cool. But I'm gonna get a cool hat or two. Every woman owes herself a cool hat. Reviewed by Stephanie Sane Average Rating:![]() |

Countless black women would rather attend church naked than hatless. For these women, a church hat, flamboyant as it may be, is no mere fashion accessory; it's a cherished African American custom, one observed with boundless passion by black women of various religious denominations... |

Back In The DaysReviewsThis book took me way back. This book is a photo album for me. It displayed people I grew up with. It caught the innonce within us. It was really nice to see all my friends, though some passed away. The book shows growing up in NY and the fashion trends at the time. This book is a must have if you grew in in Brooklyn! However, I've only got one issue with the book - where's all the Puerto Rican and white people? Two PR's and one white guy in the whole book? Come on. This is New York we're talking about here. I grew up in Park Slope Brooklyn in the 80's.. remember downtown BK, Cobble Hill, South Brooklyn, Red Hook - the hip hop/graffiti/breaking culture was very diverse and the scene reflected that. Just take a look at "Style Wars". This book is a great peek at who and what the culture was, but it's far from the whole story. More like a slice. yo who said you can use my picture. BOOGIE DOWN BRONX IN THE HOUSE, HIP HOP DON'T STOP. I'M SORRY, THESE PICTURES ARE MAKING ME GO BACK IN TIME!!!!!! Just when you thought you escaped Bell-Kangols, Sheepskins and the Koch administration, along comes "Back In The Days". Photograhper Jamel Shabazz's vibrant tome is fresher than two-tone British Walkers with the LEE suit to match! More like your man's childhood photo album, B.T.D. is a melting pot of style, attitude and a throw-back to the glory days of 80's Hip Hop fashion. Looking at these pages brought back fond memories of Kurtis Blow and B-boys, Jordache n' Jettas, subway graffiti and shopping on Delancey. Jamel does a great job of capturing the youth of New York in one of the most stylish and important decades in Hip Hop history. It would've been dope though to include actual info (i.e., date, location and names of subjects and/or crews) on each page, but the omissions only help to arouse curiosity. Funny enough, the irony in the era(s) being covered in this book is: no matter what the socioeconomic conditions of the times were, (i.e., drugs, poverty, crime, Reganomics etc.) kids in NY always found a way to look good! Back In The Days is a great book and an excellent reference to a period in Hip Hop history when the word "fresh" wasn't just a catchphrase, but a way of life. --James "Koe" Rodriguez I got this book as soon as it came out, and it is better than I had expected. I always wished I had more photos of the outfits and growing up in the 80's and this book does justice to how we looked. Everything is nicely represented in this book although I wish more West Coast. But still, It's Fantastic and It's Nicely bound very artsy cool! Average Rating:![]() |

Beyond Yoga Supplex Original CapriReviewsthese fit beautifully, wear well after washings and are, by far, my favorite yoga pants. Great fit, offers plenty of flexibility for yoga or just lounging around the house. Comfortable. These are cute pants, they are soft, they fit great and stay in place. However, I would not recommend them for anything more intense than yoga. I have had mine for about a year and have used them for spinning, running and aerobics and they are showing LOTS of wear and piling. They will probably hold up fine just for yoga, but if you are looking for general work out pants, I would try something else. Although I actually received the pants and not the capri style I ordered, the pants were so comfortable and beautiful that I didn't bother exchanging them. By far the best feeling article of yoga clothing I own, the pants' fabric is so soft yet gently fitted. No muffin top or crotch ride up either! I used the manufacturers size chart, measured my hips, and have no problem with fit at all. I don't think I'll buy any other brand of yoga clothing from now on. Worth the price. The pants are great. They fit well and were exactly what I had expected. Great price as well! Average Rating:![]() |

Beyond Yoga Supplex Original JacketReviewsI was looking for the perfect jacket: one that flattering enough to teach yoga in, yet functional enough to actually practice in as well. This is it! I usually wear an XS top, and the XS in this jacket fits well. The body is fitted enough so that it doesn't fall in my face during down dog, but I can layer a tank and long-sleeve tee underneath. I was most worried about sleeve length (I'm 5'5 and have long arms), but they hit right past my wrists. They do hike up when I reach overhead, but it isn't that big of a deal. Plus, the fabric is supersoft and stretchy, and the blue color is beautiful. Overall, I'm really happy with the jacket. I was torn between the small and medium after reading the reviews. I'm 5'7" and 140lbs... The medium fit perfectly! It's tight enough to be flattering, but there's enough room in case I want to wear a thicker shirt underneath. Also gives more room for movement while running. Jacket is very soft, feminine, and has long arms which I love. I will buy more! The Beyond Yoga Original Jacket is so comfortable and stylish that I have purchased it in two different colors, and, as financial resources permit, will probably continue to add to my collection. I'm petite (5'2")with a 34B chest and the size XS fits perfectly. Advisory for those with medium or larger builds: the jacket is very fitted and could be tight if you are large chested. I'm on the thin side and the jacket is fitted enough that I usually only wear either a light t-shirt or fitted tank underneath. The jacket looks stylish with jeans or even more tailored pants (I've worn it to work in an office setting). The fabric is soft with some stretch; it is great to wear for the beginning of a yoga or pilates workout until you have warmed up. Highly recommended--expect compliments! I am happy with the beyond yoga outfit tho I believe the size Med pants run quite tight!!! Or maybe I am a large!?? I love this jacket. It is so soft and I like that it does not have a hood. It has two inside pockets which is nice for keys and ID. I purchased a size small and am 5'4" 115 lb and it fits perfect. I purchased a red jacket and did notice that the color faded a slight bit after washing, but no balls and seems to wear well. I wish that I had the money to buy more. Average Rating:![]() |
